By Week 8, 2021, Jones had been selected by the Rams in the third round of the draft and was starting at middle linebacker. From then on, Jones has served as the Rams’ defensive equivalent of a Swiss army knife, performing any and all tasks required of him.

Midway through his rookie season, he was asked to start, but when Bobby Wagner joined the Rams in 2022, he was requested to step down. Jones was made team captain in 2023 and assigned to call defensive plays for a defense with a very young roster. Furthermore, Jones last season took on a new position as a blitzer after the Rams pass rush collapsed. He played 32 games and was only deployed 33 times as a blitzer in his first two seasons. He blitzed 58 times in 15 games in 2023 alone.

You could certainly argue that Jones’s third season was a breakthrough already. The 2021 third-round selection had 145 tackles (14 for loss), made a tackle on an astounding 27.9 percent of his run defensive snaps, and started 15 games. Azeez Al-Shaair, who had 25.9 percent, was the only other player among the 62 who had at least 100 tackles to have more than 25 percent.Following those results, the fourth-year “breakout” may have had more to do with the public realizing who he is.

For the time being, the Los Angeles Rams have their quarterback for the coming season. But given the favorable circumstances around the team, there’s a chance the squad will start 2024 with a fourth-string quarterback. That wouldn’t require much to occur. Let’s examine why.

According to reports, Matthew Stafford is not thrilled with his contract, which is the first problem facing the room. Sitting out is one of the most popular bargaining strategies if things go south in that area. Naturally, it is quite uncommon for a quarterback to miss any games during the regular season. Holdouts in the preseason are incredibly uncommon.

According to Spotrac, Stafford is covered through the 2026 season, which would make one think that any negotiating would be done in a year at the earliest. However, the quarterback’s problem isn’t with his earnings this year. Rather, the 2025 and 2026 guaranteed amounts are an issue, per CBS Sports.

As such, if a holdout happens and runs into the regular season, the team would be forced to turn to the second-string quarterback. However, there is a problem there, as well.
