The Boston Red Sox’s new-look outfield has resulted in elite production on all sides of the ball. Jarren Duran went to center field and has played outstanding defense, Tyler O’Neill has pushed himself into Home Run Derby contention, and rookie right fielder Wilyer Abreu has done a little of both.

Abreu did not receive consistent playing time at the start of the season, sitting out the first two games in favor of O’Neill and getting only a few at-bats in the subsequent series. The young outfielder immediately demonstrated that he merits a regular role in the lineup.

Abreu demonstrated outstanding defense first. He consistently makes run and game-saving plays in one of the league’s toughest right fields, among others. His defense was especially effective during Boston’s May 20-22 series against the Rays. Abreu nicked a double from Yandy Díaz and another from Richie Palacios with a great read of a hard-hit ball off the right field wall during the same game.

The 24-year-old’s multiple home run robberies and RBI at crucial times have kept his team in games. Abreu’s arm strength is in the 97th percentile in MLB, and he has two outs over average and seven defensive runs saved just over a quarter of the way into the season. He has continually been crucial for the Red Sox, as both his offense and defense appear to shine at the proper times.

Abreu is slicing.270/.350/.475, with an OPS of.825 and 20 RBI. He leads all rookies in extra-base hits this season, with 12 doubles, a triple, and five home runs. The only AL rookie with more home runs than Abreu is Colton Cowser, one of the other top contenders for the honor.

Abreu’s strong defense and steady offense have lessened the pain of losing Alex Verdugo. He’s been an important part of Boston’s outfield metamorphosis, as what was one of the worst outfields last season, with Duran, Verdugo, and Masataka Yoshida, has become one of the best, both offensively and defensively.

In 2022, the Red Sox acquired Abreu through a deal with the Houston Astros. Boston acquired a terrific defender and courageous bat in Christian Vázquez for two months. Although many Sox fans were disappointed to see Vázquez leave, there’s no disputing Abreu’s talent.

If Abreu maintains his current level of play, he will have a strong case for Rookie of the Year. The Sox’s outfield may be considered one of the greatest in MLB, with the 24-year-old right fielder leading the way.
