The Dallas Mavericks executed a trade on February 8, 2024, sending PJ Washington and two second-round picks to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for Grant Williams, Seth Curry, and a 2027 first-round pick. Everyone had no idea at the time that it would eventually pay off for the Mavericks and Washington in the shape of an NBA Finals trip after they defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 124-103 in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals.

Washington, who left a Hornets team that was 10–40 at the time for a Mavericks squad including Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, seemed even more surprised by his good fortune.
