The Miami Heat are expected to be among the league’s busiest teams in the first twenty-four hours following the season’s conclusion, whether or not the NBA Finals conclude on Monday night.
This is so that teams can negotiate with their upcoming free agents from the day after the Finals until the start of free agency on June 30. This is due to a change in the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.
That may allow the Heat to enter the open market after more than a week of negotiating new contracts with their own free agents.
Delon Wright, Patty Mills, and Haywood Highsmith are among Miami’s unrestricted free agents.
The Heat will have an opportunity to extend their offer to Highsmith before the market has a chance to raise the price, which makes this new CBA wrinkle particularly significant in regards to him. According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, Highsmith might be able to negotiate a new deal that pays between $8 million and $10 million annually.
It’s crucial to remember that Highsmith is free to wait to test the open market even if the Heat extend a contract offer to him within this window.
It’s unlikely that Mills and Wright will make more money this summer than the veteran minimum. It’s likely unlikely that the Heat will want to bring back both, but they might want to bring back one. Wright, who can play both guard positions and has a large fan base within the Heat organization, may be valuable as a bench.
