NEW YORK (AP) — New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone benched slumping second baseman Gleyber Torres on Wednesday night after a dismal showing in the opening game of the Subway Series.

At Citi Field, Oswaldo Cabrera started his third game of the season at second base as the Yankees fell to the New York Mets 12–2. Torres will take a few days off “just to kind of reset,” according to Boone.

Starting Thursday night, the struggling Yankees will take on division rival Toronto, the bottom team in the AL East, in a four-game series. Boone stated, “It just felt like he needs it.” He’s just too vital, in my opinion, and he’s a man I know will pick things up. But it hasn’t been easy. It’s been difficult. I believe that he is somewhat aware of that. I think that taking a deep breath and getting him moving will hopefully benefit him both physically and mentally.

The division opponent Toronto, which is last in the AL East, will host the struggling Yankees for a four-game series starting on Thursday night.

According to Boone, “just felt like he needs it.” “I simply believe he’s too significant, and I know he’ll pick things up.” But it’s been difficult. It has not been easy. I believe he’s starting to sense that. To just let go and then try to get him moving again seems like something that will hopefully benefit him both mentally and physically.
