The Dallas Mavericks, who lost to the Boston Celtics in the 2024 NBA Finals, have nearly finished building their lineup.

Though the Mavs lost Tim Hardaway Jr. and Derrick Jones Jr., they gained Klay Thompson, Naji Marshall, and Quentin Grimes. There is still one roster space remaining for the team, though. One free agent the organization may choose to re-sign is a Dallas veteran who is a leader in the locker room and a favorite among fans. Nevertheless, signing him to a deal to fill the 15th roster position would be a dangerous move.

Markieff Morris is the veteran who is available as a free agent. The crowd favorite was moved from Brooklyn to Dallas in 2023, where he gained instant popularity. This summer, he will be an unrestricted free agent. Dallas is unsure whether to sign him again because he hasn’t been signed yet.

It could be best for the Mavs to hunt for another free agent rather than re-sign Morris. Morris participated in 26 games in the previous campaign, the most of which were during garbage time. The roster position would be useless in terms of on-court output with that many games played.
