Heartbreaking: Before the Hearts vs. Rangers friendly, an homage will be given to Legend.
Players who participated in the teams’ 1974 centennial match will honor Dave Mackay. His accomplishments, which saw him win the league on both sides of the border, a Scottish Cup, two Scottish League Cups, three FA Cups, and the European Cup Winner’s Cup, have made him a legend at both teams.
When the Hearts Hall of Fame was established in 2006, Mackay was one of the seven players that were inducted. And when the Spurs equivalent was established in 2004—after Bill Nicholson, Mackay’s manager at White Hart Lane, became the first—he was one of twelve admitted.
“Perhaps the most complete midfield player that Scotland has produced, Dave was a tough ball winner, a skilled passer, and a regular goal scorer,” reads the Hearts Hall of Fame bio for Mackay.
“Prior to kick-off, as part of the club’s 150th celebrations, players from both sides that featured in the 1974 centenary match between the two clubs will be welcomed onto the pitch, as current players form a guard of honour,” the organization stated.
“After that, the players will assemble around a Dave Mackay roundel that will be placed in the center circle for a minute of applause during which both teams will honor a legend from their respective teams.
“We kindly ask supporters to take their seats prior to the minute’s applause and thank all fans for their co-operation.”
The friendly game begins at 7:00 p.m. Additionally, Hearts TV International and PPV for viewers in the UK and Ireland will broadcast it live.
