Tragic: A Toronto Blue Jays legend who played with the Red Sox was discovered dead in a swimming pool.
Jimy Williams, who won World Series titles as a coach with the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies and managed the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, and Houston Astros, passed away on Friday.
Jimy Williams, the former manager of the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, and Houston Astros, passed away on Friday at the age of 80, his former teams confirmed on Monday morning.
In the 1960s, Williams began his career as an infielder for Fresno State. Before a shoulder injury interrupted his playing career and made room for him to pursue a coaching career, he played for the St. Louis Cardinals for two seasons.
Williams started the 1989 season with a 12-24 record and guided the Blue Jays to three straight winning seasons before being sacked. Williams then moved with Cox to Atlanta, where he was a member of the staff that captured the 1995 World Series.
Williams is credited for persuading Cox to select future Hall of Fame third baseman Chipper Jones with the first overall pick in the 1990 MLB Draft, according to Peter Gammons of The Athletic.
