Marvin Barnes, who helped Providence reach the Final Four in 1973, passed away at his Providence home.
According to a Providence College news statement on Monday, Marvin Barnes, who guided Providence to the 1973 Final Four, has passed away. Barnes was sixty-two.
The cause of the demise is not known.
The 6-9, 220-pound center Barnes was a unanimous All-American and led the NCAA in rebounds (18.7) in the 1973–74 campaign.
In a statement, Bob Driscoll, the director of athletics at Providence College, said, “Marvin will always be remembered as one of the greatest Friars of all time.” “He broke a great deal of records while a Friar and will always be associated with Coach [Dave] Gavitt’s incredible squad, which made it to the 1973 Final Four.”
After playing for the Friars, Barnes was selected by the 76ers with the second overall choice in the 1974 NBA Draft.
