The Los Angeles Angels’ former director of communications, Eric Prescott Kay, was found guilty on Thursday of supplying the chemicals that caused pitcher Tyler Skaggs to overdose and die in 2019.
According to The Associated Press, Kay was found guilty on one count of drug conspiracy and drug distribution resulting in death. When he is found guilty on June 28, he might receive a life sentence.
Kay went on multiple travels with the team as their point of contact for PR. According to AP, the 2019 trip to Texas was his first since getting out of treatment. Not long after Skaggs passed away, he was put on leave since he didn’t join the team again.
On July 1, 2019, Skaggs, 27, was discovered unconscious at a hotel in Southlake, Texas, as per the authorities. During the Angels’ series against the Texas Rangers, he was in Texas.
In the 2009 draft, Skaggs was selected by the Angels and later traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks. After signing with the Angels again for the 2014 campaign, Skaggs has amassed a 25-32 record.
