In a Tuesday afternoon trade with the Reds, the Red Sox parted ways with a bright young pitching prospect in an effort to increase the depth of their bullpen.

Boston sent right-hander Ovis Portes to Cincinnati in exchange for reliever Lucas Sims, who is due for free agency this winter, according to a club announcement. The Red Sox designated injured left-hander Brandon Walter for assignment in order to create space on their 40-man roster for Sims.

Baseball America ranked pitcher Portes as the 10th best prospect in the club and the 29th best prospect in Boston’s farm system. This season, the 19-year-old pitcher made his debut after recording a 2.12 ERA (3.12 FIP) in 11 appearances (five starts) totaling 34 innings pitched between the Florida

Born in Antigua and Barbuda, Portes signed a $25,000 international free agency contract with the Red Sox in March 2022. That June, he made his professional debut in the Dominican Summer League, a level he repeated the previous year despite playing in just four games and producing lackluster results.

Before being promoted to Salem in early June, Portes broke camp with the rookie-level FCL Red Sox this past spring and put together four straight scoreless performances (13 innings). Then, in seven appearances (five starts) and 21 innings, he pitched to a 3.43 ERA (3.64 FIP) with 25 strikeouts to 15 walks for Boston’s Carolina League affiliate. He was batting just.213 against opposing hitters.
