Only a few weeks before the MLB trade deadline, the Boston Red Sox were a team stuck at.500 all the time. To persuade the front office to make a deal at the deadline, they emerged as one of the league’s hottest teams from June to the All-Star break.

Red Sox supporters were concerned, meanwhile, due to a dismal record following the All-Star break. While Boston’s chief baseball officer Craig Breslow stated that he intended to look for an impact righty bat and veteran starter to add to the club, the team also needed help in the bullpen given their recent struggles and injuries.

The Red Sox did address their biggest shortcomings, albeit perhaps not in the manner that most supporters had hoped. Still, Breslow’s first trade deadline as the team’s manager was among the best in Boston’s history.

James Paxton was added by the Red Sox as their first trade deadline addition. The seasoned pitcher was back with his 2022–23 team only a few days after the Dodgers designated him for assignment.

With the Dodgers, the 35-year-old pitched 89 1/3 innings with a 4.43 ERA. Although he is a lefty and will provide some variety to Boston’s all-right-handed rotation, his walk and strikeout rates are not very high.

Shortly after the trade deadline, Paxton started his second stint with the Red Sox and allowed three runs on six hits in 4.1 innings. Paxton’s first game back with the team wasn’t made easier by Boston’s defense, but he ended the evening with a mediocre start in the books.
