The NFL preseason serves as a reminder of just how difficult it is for athletes to succeed in the professional ranks, particularly for undrafted rookies. In addition to contending with the teams’ draft selections, they also have to fight it out with free agents and veterans who are trying to find a place to call home. Carson Steele, a rookie with the Kansas City Chiefs, has to improve despite making an impression throughout practice with his strong play. Ask Andy Reid, the head coach.

Following Steele’s strong performance in the Chiefs’ 26-13 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in their Sunday preseason opener, the head coach issued a challenge to the running back. He averaged 7.3 yards per rush and scored his first NFL touchdown in that game, demonstrating a lot of promise. Because of his play, Steele was even seen as a favorite to take Louis Rees-Zammit’s place at fullback/RB4.

The coach remarked, “He’s got to be a good special teams player.” “You know, he needs to be a good special teams player and able to carry the ball and stay aggressive like he is doing right now if he wants to make the team.”
