The Boston Celtics and the Indiana Pacers, Dallas Mavericks, and Minnesota Timberwolves are the new teams competing for the Larry O’Brien Trophy in the NBA Conference Finals. Due to the debuts of rookies Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and several other well-known players from women’s college basketball, along with the NBA postseason, there has been more focus on the beginning of the WNBA season. There are a few former Buckeyes who have been successful in the NBA and WNBA, despite Ohio State’s alumni not having as many players as some of the other major college basketball powers.

Mike Conley is an NBA player that has been around for 17 years. This is only his second trip to the Western Conference Semifinals, matching the number of visits the Minnesota Timberwolves have made as a team. Regretfully, Conley has failed to secure a victory in a game during the ultimate phase preceding the NBA Finals.

When he first played in the WCF as a member of Memphis, the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Grizzlies 4-0. The Timberwolves have now lost two close games in Minneapolis this season against the Dallas Mavericks, 2-0. Conley missed game five of the second round series against Denver, but he has played in 12 games thus far this postseason. Conley is averaging 11.4 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game. Conley has only failed to score in double figures in two of the postseason games this year, and that was in the series opener against Dallas, where he managed just six points in just thirty-one minutes.

Even though Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns of Minnesota are two extremely talented young players, Conley’s vast experience will be just as valuable to the Timberwolves. Since Edwards and Towns have had difficulty staying consistent in the series against the Mavericks, the defense and intelligent

Conley is averaging 11.4 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game in the 12 playoff games he has participated in this year (he missed game five of the second round series versus Denver). Only two of this year’s playoff games have seen Conley score fewer than ten points; the first occurred in the series opener against Dallas, where he managed just six points in thirty-one minutes.

Though Minnesota has some excellent young players in Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns, Conley’s experience will be just as valuable to the Timberwolves. Given that Edwards and Towns have had difficulty staying consistent thus far in the Mavericks series, the defense and clever
