Heartsbreaking: Vols Two Top Star Player Dies In Car Crash Accident….
The University of Tennessee reports that Bill Justus, who was a great athlete at Fulton High School and later an All-American guard for Tennessee basketball, passed away on October 17 at his home close to Nashville. He was seventy-six.
Fulton basketball coach Jody Wright posted on social media, saying, “Fulton High School and UT lost a legend last night.” “Bill Justus loved both of those colleges and was an All American there. For my generation, Bill was a hero since we grew up hearing John Ward call “Justus from 20…Bottom! He really was a gentleman.
Justus was an all-state football player in 1964 and an all-state basketball player in both 1964 and 1965 prior to his graduation from Fulton in 1965. In addition, he was named to the All-America basketball team in 1965 and the All-America football team in 1964 with honorable mention.
After receiving a football scholarship to Tennessee, Justus participated in the team’s freshman campaign in 1965 before deciding to focus entirely on basketball the next year. He started for the Vols for three seasons, serving as captain in 1968–69 during his last year.
The 6-foot-1, 175-pound guard was selected to the first team of the SEC in 1967–68 and 1968–69, and he assisted in leading Tennessee to an SEC championship in 1966–67.
Then-sophomore guard scored two free throws late in the third overtime to give the Vols the victory in Starkville, Mississippi, in 1967’s SEC title-clinching victory over Mississippi State. John Ward, the renowned broadcaster, was also on the line.
