The Baltimore Orioles would prefer some regularity when they return home on Monday afternoon to open a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox.

However, if they continue to win consistently, they will be able to overcome some of the oddities in their routines. The Orioles are coming off a 4-3 road trip that was marred by multiple weather delays. There was a lengthy delay before the start of Sunday’s game in Chicago, where they defeated the White Sox 4-1 to clinch a four-game sweep.

“I’m proud of our guys,” said Orioles manager Brandon Hyde. “There’s been a lot of sitting, waiting, and delays. You can get complacent. You may become flat pretty easily, and I believe practically every game in this series has had some form of weather issue. So I give our team a lot of credit for how this road trip began.”

Baltimore starter Kyle Bradish went seven innings without allowing a hit on Sunday, so left-hander Cole Irvin will have a tough act to follow against Boston.

After a pair of relief appearances, Irvin (4-2, 3.15 ERA) will return to the Orioles’ starting rotation. He has only pitched twice since May 10, as Baltimore has adjusted its rotation and dealt with schedule issues.

Irvin allowed more runs (five) in 3 1/3 innings from the bullpen last week at St. Louis than he had in his previous 32 1/3 innings combined.

In six career appearances versus Boston, including three starts, Irvin is 0-1 with a 5.16 ERA in 22 2/3 innings.

This will be the teams’ second series this season. The Orioles won three consecutive games in Boston from April 9 to 11.

The Red Sox haven’t been in much of a rhythm lately, though.

The Red Sox will start right-hander Cooper Criswell (2-1, 2.86 ERA). He’s had four no-decisions this month, but the Red Sox won three of them and have won five of his last six starts. Criswell, who is in his first season with Boston, had never played the Orioles, despite playing 11 games for another American League East side, the Tampa Bay Rays, over two seasons.

Overall, starting pitching has benefited the Red Sox.

“You feel like our starters are going to give us a good start,” Cora stated. Cora indicated the Red Sox could be missing outfielder Tyler O’Neill again on Monday due to a strained right knee. He also sat out on Sunday.

Adley Rutschman, the Orioles’ catcher/designated hitter, drove in seven runs in the Chicago series, two of which came on his tenth home run of the season in the series finale.
