Cardinals News: Sonny Gray’s death aboard a plane has just been announced by the Cardinals.
As the St. Louis captain, he won three pennants and a World Series while introducing “Whiteyball,” a pitching, defense, and speed combo.
The Hall of Fame manager Whitey Herzog, who in the 1980s guided the St. Louis Cardinals to three pennants and a World Series title, passed away in St. Louis on Monday. After Willie Mays, he was the second-oldest Hall of Famer at the age of 92.
The Cardinals announced his death.
Herzog used to say, “Since I stopped trying to play, baseball has been good to me.”
He was signed by the Yankees in 1949, but he was never able to leave their minor league system. During spring training camps, he learned all of the baseball fundamentals from Manager Casey Stengel. Over the course of eight seasons, he played outfield for four American League teams, with relatively mediocre results.
However, Herzog settled into a managerial niche.
