New York’s bats were producing, thanks in large part to the blockbuster offseason acquisition of Juan Soto, and they got a few pitching reinforcements, with Gerrit Cole returning to action in June. However, the Yankees have been going through quite a rough patch over the past month or so.

They were in the midst of an appalling 5-16 run in early July, making them the only team in 2024 to have won just five of 21 games at one point in the season. Since then, they have lost seven of their previous 12 games, including a 9-7 loss to their bitter rivals, the Boston Red Sox, on Friday night.
