ESPN REPORT: Derek Lalonde, Head Coach of the Red Wings, Was Fired Because of…

The Detroit Red Wings organization has a long history of producing numerous well-known players that have donned the winged wheel. However, in terms of nationality, who has been the best to wear the Red Wings jersey?

Throughout the history of the league, 789 players, or nearly 800, were Canadian citizens. The name most associated with hockey fans worldwide is that of the guy dubbed “Mr. Hockey,” Gordie Howe. Although Yzerman has a long list of impressive career accomplishments, Howe stood out from the crowd. The native of Saskatchewan was the greatest of his era, setting numerous records that persisted for years. Prior to Patrick Marleau breaking it in 2021, he held the record for the most games played (1,767, counting his stint in the WHA and subsequently the Hartford Whalers). Until “The Great One” Wayne Gretzky overtook him in 1994, he also held the record for most goals scored (801), a mark that has since been broken by Alex Ovechkin.
