Chiefs Report: Chiefs Star Player Planing Against A….
There are some surprises in the Chiefs’ reported contract plans for this talented class of pending free agents, which could result in a defense-wide reorganization following the 2024–25 campaign.
Creed Humphrey, Trey Smith, Nick Bolton, and Harrison Butker are among the players Kansas City seeks to reach multiyear deals with, according to Nate Taylor of The Athletic. Notably absent from Taylor’s report are defensive end Charles Omenihu and veteran safety Justin Reid.
Brett Veach may still choose to retain those players, but Reid’s removal in particular provides some information about the team’s post-2024 goals.
Humphrey and Smith are one of the top interior offensive line tandems in the NFL, and Taylor wrote about the Chiefs’ desire to retain them together. But Smith in particular might end up being quite expensive. The highest-paid guards in the league earn over $20 million a year, which is a startling amount considering the team’s previous commitments to other players.
It’s difficult to see how Reid fits into Kansas City’s future plans if Smith signs. Being only 27 years old, he has a $14.25 million cap hit this year, which means he will probably fetch a big price on the free market. It’s more likely that Reid’s tenure with the team is coming to an end this season because Veach has not once signed a secondary player to a significant extension.
