Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson claimed Dan Campbell’s analogy helped encourage him to return to Detroit for the 2024 season.
On the aircraft trip back from the Detroit Lions’ heartbreaking loss to the San Francisco 49ers, offensive coordinator Ben Johnson thought about his future. Johnson has just had one of the most successful seasons in Lions history. He had already performed several head coaching interviews, and more awaited him when the plane landed.
But then he remembered an analogy Lions coach Dan Campbell used earlier in this era of Lions football.
“We’re sailing down the ocean, and at that moment, we were in the Arctic,” Johnson said. “We were striking icebergs, and there were storms going on. These were dark days. But he had insight, and he saw where we were going. He reassured

Last year, the clouds parted, and they had their first taste of tropical air. Johnson had only made the playoffs once in his 11 seasons as a coach before 2023. “What struck me as particularly interesting was the fact that there were eight (head coach) positions this year. What would you set as the over-under for the number of people still working in three years? I’d put the over/under at 4.5, and I believe five of them will be out of work within three years,” Johnson added. “So, looking at it from that perspective, if I get the opportunity to go down that path, it’s about how I get to that second deal. How should I put myself up? The stars need to align. I’m not going to do anything just because.
“I absolutely enjoy what I’m doing right now. I adore where I am, and my family loves where we are, love
